Independence Day Celebrations

Date: 15-08-2009
Time: 9-30 AM
Venue: Vagrants’ Home and Destitutes’ Home at Uttarpara Kheyaghat

Independence Day occupies a special place in the heart of every Indian citizen and to make it even more special we decided to celebrate the day with the vagrant women and destitute children at Vagrants’ Home and Destitutes’ Home.

We initiated the proceedings of the day when Rtn. Sanjay Mukherjee, President of Rotary Club of Serampore, hoisted the tricolor at the crossing near Uttarpara Co-operative Bank. The National Anthem was sung by all Rotaractors, Rotarians, Innerwheel members and the mass gathered around. Then sweets were distributed to all present at the occasion.

Then we moved on to the Vagrants home for women, where we gifted them a stereo speaker with FM which the inmates can listen and enjoy. Rtr. Sarathi Pal planted a tree at the place to commemorate the world forest week.

Next we went to the destitutes’ home adjacent to the vagrants’ home where we distributed 60 pairs of sandals which our parent Rotary, Rotary club of Serampore sponsored. Another fruit tree was planted there by Rtr. Sarathi Pal and we gave the remaining plants to the gardener to plant them in different locations.

Then we organised a boat trip, the national flag on top of it to cherish the day….the day for which many a people have given their lives. Truly, again a again this day makes us realize the importance of being responsible citizens of the society.

FRIENDSHIP DAY AT CHESHIRE HOME

August 02, 2009
Uttarpara

Unlike the Friendship Days of earlier years, this year we made it special as we celebrated the day with the inmates of Cheshire Home, a home for the mentally challenged and old people today.
We distributed cakes and befriended the inmates by tying friendship bands. Then Rtr. Pinaki played his guitar to the tune of a few songs to which a lady in the home sung a few lines. Then Rtr. Priyanka narrated a poem which mesmerised all present.

We also bought a few candles and greeting cards which they had crafted.
Unfortunately we had to leave Cheshire home in the afternoon as their lunch session was approaching but our hearts were filled with joy on making new friends this friendship day!
We had also distributed sweets to the people who had gathered for the mass at the local church to mark this day.
